Open studios with Ashley Hanson and Janie Macdonald
Open Studios with Ashley and Janie at the Shire Hall Gallery
It’s that time of year again when our two local artists Ashley Hanson and Janie M McDonald will be transforming Bodmin’s Shire Hall Gallery into a studio and exhibition space for three weeks from Saturday 27th May. This is a wonderful opportunity to come and see the creative process of two very different artists alongside a selection of their recent work.
Talking about Open Studios Ashley says ‘I have produced some of my strongest work in the Shire Hall it’s such a wonderful space and I love the opportunity to work on a large scale. One of the paintings I made last year ‘City of Glass 31’ – ( A Study in Violet) was short listed for the Connect 2 Colour Art Prize at Lacey Contemporary Gallery in London and has recently been long listed for the Jacksons Art Prize. I’m very much looking forward to working alongside Janie again and talking to visitors about the work in progress’.
Janie studied ceramics, textiles and print making and ‘stitch and constructed textiles’ at Art College and her work reflects her love of mixed media. ‘ I like to start with a sketch and then see what ideas are generated by thinking about all the aspects of the subject. I sometimes collect objects and photographs and use those too. From sketches, I start experimenting with ideas and materials, around the nature of the subject, and see where it takes me. I work with a wide range of materials and techniques: paint, drawing, mark making, textiles, printmaking, stitch and I then construct collages editing the elements as I go along.’
The Gallery can be found above the Visitors Centre at the Shire Hall. Opening Times:
Saturday 28th May – Saturday 18th June, Mon- Fri 10-4 and Sat 10-5
