Type: Participatory Event

Brothers, fathers, sons, a motorcycling clergyman, a talented composer, a heroic bandsman... The Trench at Bodmin tells the true and personal stories of local Cornishmen who fought in the First World War. Follow in their footsteps, enlist at The Keep and take on a soldier’s identity. Board a steam train and head off to experience life in the trenches and the chaos of battle. The Trench experience itself is an 'immersive' event/performance - you ‘the audience’ will not be called upon to engage with the enemy (at least until all basic training is complete), however you will be taking an active role in the production and should be prepared to spend up to one hour outside. “The Service of Light Infantry does not so much require men of stature, as it requires them to be Intelligent, Hardy and Active.”  Major-General Sir John Moore. All men, women and young adults are welcome to Enlist in The Trench at Bodmin, however there are a few preliminaries and precautions for recruits to follow.  EYES FRONT! Please make sure you have fully read the additional information available at In particular, due to the nature of The Trench experience, it has not been possible to make this production fully accessible. Please or contact CRBO on 01726 879500 for further information.    Troops, go forth and Enlist in The Trench Bodmin - Your King and Country need you. Add to your Trench experience with the additional Short Plays and Picnic Ration Packs… Short Plays Enjoy one of our four short plays: ‘Beetroot Pie’, ‘Falling’, ‘Hip, Hip, Hip - Hurrah for Harleigh’ and ‘The Spy Who Loved DH Lawrence’, starting at 5.00pm as part of The Trench experience. Lanhydrock House, a local cricket team, DH Lawrence and family secrets… Discover Bodmin’s alternative First World War stories in four additional short plays specially commissioned for The Trench at Bodmin. One of the plays is performed at The Keep most nights starting at 5.00pm for just £5.00 NB There's limited seating so advance booking with your main Trench experience tickets is advised. Ration Packs Boxed in a handy carry box to take with you on the steam train to The Trench, these ration packs have been carefully selected to give a ‘feel of the period’, rather than an accurate copy of wartime recipes! Featuring local produce, this delicious Cornish picnic is the perfect treat for the troops, offers a convenient option for pre-performance fare and adds something extra special to your Trench experience. Ration packs must be ordered in advance, and then collected from Bodmin & Wenford Railway after Enlistment.  There is a Meat or Vegetarian option available and most dietary requirements can be catered for with prior notice. Please state your requirement at the point of ordering your tickets at
